The Nederlands Fotomuseum in Rotterdam is all about BLACK&WHITE from 2012 to 2014. During these three years, a prominent artist or photographer displays, in the months January and February, a sensational installation around the theme of BLACK&WHITE. Two large theme-based exhibitions take place in Autumn: WHITE in 2013, and BLACK in 2014. The programme, developed and curated by intendant Anne van der Zwaag, has been made possible with the very special and generous financial help of the Wertheimer Fund.

Exhibition Tricks & Flicks at Villa Noailles, Hyères

_MG_2480Mastering a trick takes practice. After fifteen years of running a design studio, we have learnt to trust our gut feelings, combining intuition and reason.

Our tricks start as experiments. We play with materials and discover production techniques. Small discoveries like a clever weave, a fiber with resin, or a reflection of light on a certain material, are repeated as if they are the building blocks of something bigger. They mostly result in interior products. In the exhibition ‘Tricks & Flicks’ some pieces may be considered end results and some just another step in the evolution of our practice.

Masks at Exhibition ‘Design with Heart’

Curator and Scenography: Sebastian Bergne
We’re hardly short of new products in the modern world. But how often do the products we rely on really matter to us? Why do we so often favour big brand names? Is it because we trust in their power to improve our lives or because we lack the knowledge and confidence to make bolder choices ?

This exhibition gets to the heart of why these choices are important by showcasing new products that have what Sebastian Bergne calls ‘Design with Heart’. But visitors expecting to find a collection of exclusive design ‘icons’ may be in for a surprise. Exhibits range from tableware to trumpets and cheeseboards to circus equipment. Some are beautiful; a few may not even appear to have been designed at all.
The ingredients that these products have in common often transcend issues of style or aesthetics. Some are distinguished by the spirit of generosity or integrity in which they were created; others are products with the power to create a special sense of community; still more stand out because of their unique sense of innovation or their sheer beauty.

LED Zeppelin at ‘Isn’t It Romantic?’ Exhibit

led_zeppelin_on_studio_SBP_LR Between Poetry and Provocation

Romanticism, an artistic era in the 19th century, is usually only looked back upon, most often not in a friendly manner. Romanticism is seen as ‘dreamy’ and kitsch, especially compared to the modernism that has shaped our daily life. Still, this exhibition in Cologne is about contemporary, romantic design. Over the past years, a fashionable desire for romanticism seems to have developed. The exhibit tries to explore this longing for beauty. harmony and a place of fulfilment.

Studio Bertjan Pot denounces contract with Italian Design Label Skitsch.

Press Release | Schiedam | 30 November 2012

Studio Bertjan Pot denounces contract with Italian Design Label Skitsch.

September 18th 2012, Studio Bertjan Pot has denounced her contract with Italian Design Label Skitsch. Reasons for this are breach of contract by Skitsch at various points and a very difficult communication.

Skitsch was asked to remove all designs by Studio Bertjan Pot from the collection and not to sell them any longer. This concerns the ‘Dazzle Chair’, ‘Speaker Box’ and ‘Pion’.

Table Lamp ‘Pion’ has a quality issue, the neck of the lampshade closes poorly to the base of the lamp which creates a fold in the lampshade. If you have purchased the lamp, Studio Bertjan Pot advises you to return it.

Studio Bertjan Pot hopes in this way to eventually also reach Skitsch.

Studio Bertjan Pot, founded in 2003 by Bertjan Pot is known interior designer of various products which are included in the collections of famous furniture manufacturers. Also acquires the Studio increasing fame with its ‘Masks’ which was this year’s winner at the Dutch Design Awards. Also won this year’s Studio Bertjan Pot woonbeurs pin. Studio Bertjan Pot in the future will always continue to surprise with innovative products that make you happy.

Tiebreak launched at Imm Cologne 2012

tiebreak_blue_Richard_Becker_LRThere are not that many soft-skin outdoor chairs. Mostly you bring a pillow outside to sit down into your garden furniture and then take it back inside when it starts to rain. In the net we saw the possibility to make a soft (comfortable) outdoor-chair. Our advice: Put on a T-shirt, a pair of flip-flops and give your shirt and tie a break. Off course ‘Tiebreak’ can be used indoor as well. Tiebreak is part of Richard Lamperts Outdoor furniture collection.

‘New Energy in Design and Art ‘ at Museum Boymans van Beuningen

29|10|2011 – 26|02|2012, Museum Boymans van Beuningen, Rotterdam

New Energy in Design and Art is an exhibition about energy and the search for a new balance in our living environment. Artists, designers and progressive thinkers present their (alternative) ideas about our consumption of energy.

The exhibition features surprising, strange and sometimes unimaginable objects and sculptures that deal with the theme of sustainable progress. Some are poetic, others are alienating or perhaps brilliant. But they all relevant. This exhibition will be an eye-opener.

New Energy in Design and Art demonstrates how we can think differently about the consumption of energy. In Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen sustainable progress will be approached and presented in an art-historical context.

The artists and designers in this exhibition (including Atelier NL, the duo Auger-Loizeau, Joris Laarman, Philippe Rahm, Bertjan Pot, Michiel van Bakel, John Körmeling, Oskar de Kiefte, Eric Klarenbeek, Mike Thompson, Panamarenko, Jurgen Bey, mischer’traxler, Gerrit van Bakel, Dunne & Raby, Jeroen Verhoeven,  Zoe Papadopoulou, Design Drift and Theo Jansen) no longer think in terms of utopian ideas but show us pure reality. Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen attempts to bring this reality into contact with our imagination.

Totem and Taboo is an exhibition exploring the relationship between art and design. Since the 1960s, artists have been openly influenced by objects and persons from the field of design and have integrated designers items into their works, some of the best-known exponents being Donald Judd, Franz West and Richard Artschwager. Conversely, designers have also appropriated concepts and elements of the art world. The exhibition concentrates on a second generation of artists and designers active today.

Aligning itself with the popular description of design as “applied art”, Totem and Taboo takes the hypothetical position of art functioning as a close relative of design. That metaphor of “family” brought WAASO, the workgroup of authors and curators responsible for the project, to the title Totem and Taboo. The phrase was coined by Sigmund Freud in 1910, at the very beginnings of modern design. He defines “totem” as an object representing an absent relative, while “taboo” reflects a fear of incest or improper relations within the family. Though not referring directly to art and design, WAASO has interpreted the text as an appropriate model to view the relationship between these two creative disciplines.

A decorative LED lamp inspired by the Heracleum Plant. The white leaves/lenses ramify from one branch creating a very technical, natural structure. By using the technique of coating conductive layers, the lamp is very thin and delicate. A design not possible by using normal wires.

Font of the Loom ‘The making of’ by

11|06|2011, Opening at the textile museum Tilburg.

Bertjan Pot presents his new tablecloths today for the textile museum in Tilburg. was commissioned to make this ‘making of’ movie of his project ‘Font of the loom’ which takes us through his process of designing a typeface that could be weaved with pixel precise fabric bonds.

Bertjan chose to use a series of texts downloaded from wikipedia and used those to weave the tablecloths with. At first view the tablecloths look a little mundane but when you look closer you’ll see biographies of Michael Jackson or a detailed description of what a Haiku is. The most important thing is, according to Bertjan, not the content of the texts but the actual letter and with this project he tries to bring across the beauty of typography with technical precision.

Interview by the SIAT

17|05|2011, Schiedam

DutchDesign is an undergraduate field school and research program offered by the School of Interactive Arts and Technology (SIAT) at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada. Under the directorship of Russell Taylor, Senior Lecturer in Design, a research was conducted in the area of design and innovation in the Netherlands. DutchDesign is part of a larger research project that has been studying the same phenomena in Italy with the ItaliaDesign Field School program since 2004. The most significant contribution to the field are the interviews conducted in the Netherlands with leading designers, thinkers, architects and design manufacturers. Each year, the new team builds on the previous year’s research. DutchDesign is an open source network that values above all knowledge-share on a global scale.
